Steve & Kaylee Techau

Steve and Kaylee, along with their two kids Jeremiah and Addy, decided to RV as a way to better prioritize family time and see more of the country. They made the jump in 2019, bought a Keystone Montana High Country and never looked back. When planning family trips, we prioritize being present with each other and making sure everyone has a say in what we do. With tweens in the mix, those opinions can be strong! We sit down as a family to discuss location, nearby attractions, amenities, and trip duration, ensuring that every adventure has something special for everyone.

A couple of tips for parents planning a Colorado getaway:

  • Acclimate to the altitude: Altitude sickness is real, so give your family a day or two to adjust before heading into the mountains.
  • Book early: Camping in Colorado is extremely popular, and spots fill up fast. If you want prime sites, reserve as far ahead as possible!

Estes Park

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

Get ready for a fun-filled escape where elk roam freely through the park—sometimes even napping in the shade! This RV park is packed with activities, including mini golf, a jump pillow, an arcade, a playground, and opportunities to meet Yogi Bear and friends. The park accommodates RVs up to 40 feet with full and partial hookups and is open from March to October.

Nearby attractions include Estes Park’s charming downtown, the iconic Stanley Hotel, and access to Rocky Mountain National Park. Pro tip: Visit in the fall to catch the golden glow of the aspen trees - it's like winning the camping jackpot!

Littleton, CO

Chatfield State Park

Located just southwest of Denver, Chatfield State Park offers a serene escape near the foothills. With spacious sites, full and partial hookups, and proximity to Chatfield Lake and Chatfield Gravel Pond, this park is perfect for boating, fishing, paddleboarding, or kayaking.

There are biking and walking trails galore, plus a horse stable offering sunset dinner rides. Wildlife, like deer, frequently wander through, adding to the park’s charm. Nearby attractions include Red Rocks Amphitheater, Chatfield Botanical Gardens, and plenty of dining options. Don’t miss the vibrant sunsets here - they’re absolutely unforgettable! 

Pro tip: Colorado State Parks can be booked 6 months in advance; you had better be on your game if you want a weekend reservation during the summer.

Garfield County, CO

Rifle Gap State Park

On Colorado’s western side, Rifle Gap State Park boasts turquoise reservoir waters ideal for paddleboarding, swimming, and boating. The park features both full hookup and dry camping options, with spots that cater to all RV sizes.

Disconnect from the hustle and reconnect with family in this peaceful park. Internet is sparse (we used Starlink), but you won’t miss it with so much to enjoy: hiking, golf, and even a visit to a local alpaca farm that had our kids in heaven! Remember to book early to snag the best spots.

Larkspur, CO

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

The ultimate family destination in Colorado, this park is a hub of excitement: waterpark, multiple pools, hot tub, restaurants, live music on the weekends, golf cart rentals (which you will want because this park is huge), and so many amenities, I can’t list them all.

Our tweens loved the jump pillow, ice cream nights with live bands, and endless activities. Late summer visitors can enjoy the nearby Renaissance Festival, but honestly, you could stay entertained without ever leaving the park!

Monument, CO

Colorado Heights Camping Resort

Just outside Colorado Springs, this family-owned campground has been welcoming visitors for over 40 years. It offers full and partial hookups and rustic charm. During summer, themed weekends with activities for kids and adults add to the fun, plus Friday night bonfires with s’mores bring everyone together.

The kids loved crawdad fishing, petting goats, and splashing in the pool. Nearby attractions include Garden of the Gods, the Manitou Incline, and the Air Force Academy.

Gunnison, CO

Thousand Trails Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch

Nestled near Gunnison, this hidden gem overlooks Blue Mesa Reservoir and offers full and partial hookups. Families can enjoy multiple pools, pickleball courts, a fishing pond, and even an on-site horse ranch.

Gunnison is a hub for outdoor adventure - think hiking, fishing, and even hunting. The peaceful setting, sage-scented air, and starry nights make this a perfect place to relax and connect as a family.
