Meet the Baileys

The Wild Thornbaileys are a family of six traveling in their 44 ft Highland Ridge 395BHS Open Range. After almost losing their son to undiagnosed type one diabetes they took their second chance at life, sold everything, and have been adventuring around the country for the past five years with no plan of stopping!

  • Describe your camping style

We have a very eclectic travel and camping style. During the winter months, we enjoy staying warm in southern states and utilizing full hookups at RV resorts. Once spring hits and the country warms up we begin our travels north. From spring to fall we do a lot of boondocking off-grid using our solar and generators and usually circle the country visiting family from Washington to NY state.

  • What is something that always lifts your spirits?

Being outdoors in nature always lifts my spirits! Whether it's walking barefoot in sand letting ocean waves hit my feet or hiking through canyons and mountains, as long as I'm outdoors on an adventure (especially if I'm barefoot) it's always a beautiful experience for me!

  • What is your preferred type of camping?

We do a LOT of RV park camping but my favorite type would be boondocking. Every single time we boondock I find us having more quality time with each other. There are fewer distractions, less technology use, and more exploring and being in nature. Whether we're having a campfire telling stories under the stars or making breakfast together over a fire just to bring back that “real camping” feeling, it is such a beautiful experience I think every Rver should enjoy at least once!

  • What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever given or received?

“Don't rush to the destination, instead, enjoy the journey.” We left everything to live a simpler life instead of having jam-packed schedules and a chaotic lifestyle. It can be so easy to forget to slow down and enjoy the little things on the journey and only focus on getting to the destination. “We don't need all the materialistic things that we think we do,” Is also a great lesson to learn about living tiny and minimally. We start to collect memories and laughter instead of more things to fill our homes with.

  • What is your travel philosophy?

Always leave things better than you found them. Whether it's a new location you travel to or people you meet.
